Travel prizes: check costs and restrictions before entering

Compare flights, accommodation, guests, usable dates and excluded expenses.

A trip and a voucher are different prizes

A trip for two may mean specific services, a capped budget or a booking voucher. List included transport, accommodation, nights, meals, transfers and activities separately. Treat anything not mentioned as something to check.

An advertised value is not an amount of cash you will receive. Find any cash alternative, transfer restrictions and the consequences of being unable to use the prize.

Check dates and guests

A prize may have fixed dates, blackout periods, advance booking requirements or limited availability. Check departure locations and who pays to reach the departure airport. Establish age and eligibility conditions for a guest before assuming anyone can accompany you.

Travel documentation, entry permissions and personal requirements need checking against official information for the destination and travel date. Do not assume the sponsor arranges them unless the rules say so.

List possible excluded expenses

  • Travel to the departure point.
  • Baggage and optional services.
  • Meals, transfers and activities outside the package.
  • Taxes or supplements specified in the conditions.
  • Additional nights if the schedule requires them.

These are questions to investigate, not costs attributed to every promotion. Use the actual rules to decide which apply.

Read voucher conditions too

As a worked example, the Spanish Eurorepar rules give vouchers a six-month validity period and require at least two nights for a hotel booking. Eligibility for that campaign is separate from this general reading example.

Hypothetical budget check

A prize covers accommodation and event tickets but excludes transport from your city. Estimate that transport cost and decide whether you could cover it. The prize's advertised value does not automatically cover excluded expenses.

Questions for the sponsor

Ask about departure points, available dates, included services, guest conditions and expenses payable by you. Keep the reply with the rules. If an essential condition is unresolved, wait before making a purchase or reservation tied to the offer.

Compare Giveario's summary with the official source. Current official conditions take priority, and a listing is not a travel reservation.
