Types of giveaway prizes and what to check

Cash, vouchers, products, event tickets and experiences: what to look at in each kind of prize.

Why the type of prize matters

Two promotions with the same headline value can be very different once you read the details. A prize described as worth a certain amount may be cash, a voucher with an expiry date, a product that must be collected or a trip with restrictions. Look at what exactly is delivered, in what form, and what you must do to receive it.

Cash and bank transfers

Cash prizes are paid by transfer, cheque or a prepaid card. Rules say whether the amount is gross or net of tax and how long the winner has to provide bank details. Be careful with anyone who asks for payment details before you have been verified through the official route.

Vouchers and gift cards

A voucher has a face value, but it may expire, work only in certain shops or be tied to a minimum spend. Check the validity period, the stores and whether it can be combined with other offers. A voucher is not always replaceable if it is lost.

Products and bundles

Product prizes come with a model, a color or a stock condition, and the organizer may substitute an equivalent item. Ask about delivery area and who pays shipping. Prizes that are bulky or perishable can have collection windows. Alcohol, for example, usually requires a proof of age at delivery.

Tickets, events and experiences

Event prizes are tied to a date, a place and often a number of guests. Rules list what is included, such as seats, travel and accommodation, and what is not. A postponed or cancelled event may be replaced, refunded or lost, depending on the rules. For trips, see our guide to travel prizes, costs and restrictions, and check blackout dates and the companion's requirements.
