What it calculates for Spain
Prizes from contests, raffles and promotional draws are capital gains added to the general income tax base. If the prize exceeds €300 the organizer withholds 19%; for prizes in kind it makes an advance payment of 19% on the cost plus 20%. Withholding is an advance: the actual tax depends on your brackets. That is why the calculator compares income tax with and without the prize and tells you what you will pay or recover on your return.
Mexico, the United States and others
In Mexico a federal rate of 1% applies to the prize value, or 21% when the local tax exceeds 6%, plus state tax if there is one. In the United States the prize is ordinary income at fair market value taxed at your marginal rate, even if you receive no form. For other countries enter your own rate.
What it leaves out
It ignores personal allowances, deductions, region-specific scales, exemptions and public lotteries, which have their own regime. It is an estimate to help you decide. Read the guide on taxes on prizes and check the rules: sometimes the organizer covers the tax.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to declare a prize under €300?
In Spain there is no withholding below that amount, but the gain is still income and must be declared on your return.
Why does the net change with my salary?
Because the prize is added to your income and taxed in the highest brackets it reaches. More income means more tax.
What if the organizer pays the tax?
It is common for prizes in kind. Even so the prize value and the advance payment add to your income, which is why it shows in the calculation.
