Free birthday rewards in Australia: 7 loyalty programs compared

Seven Australian brands describe a birthday benefit in the terms of their loyalty programs. The rewards are real, but most are lost if you join too late, so the dates matter as much as the prize.

The short version

Join before your birthday month, add your real birth date, and check what each program asks for on the day.

Boost Juice VIBE Club, HOYTS Rewards, Starbucks Rewards and The Body Shop Love Your Body Club describe the birthday reward without a purchase condition.
Chatime Loyal-Tea, Grill'd Relish and Nando's PERi-Perks tie it to a purchase, either with the reward itself or in the months before.
Several ask for ID, and a few only send the reward if you have opted in to marketing messages.

How to make sure you actually get it

Join earlier than feels necessary. Starbucks issues its reward on the first day of your birthday month, and The Body Shop wants your birth date on the account at least 48 hours ahead. Programs such as Nando's and Chatime also look back at your earlier purchases, 6 months and 90 days respectively.
Enter your real birth date once. Grill'd lets you register a birthday only once, HOYTS will not give a second reward within 12 months even if you change the date, and Chatime takes no responsibility for a wrong date.
Check the app or your email at the start of the month. Nando's and Chatime send a voucher or barcode by email, Grill'd issues its offer on the first of the month and HOYTS applies it to your account on your birthday, and Starbucks adds it to your rewards.
Use it inside the window. HOYTS rewards last 30 days, Grill'd's offer 31 days, The Body Shop's voucher 30 days, and Boost Juice allows two days either side of the date. The Chatime terms and FAQ disagree on how long the voucher lasts, so read the expiry on the voucher itself.

Free, voucher or conditional?

Not every reward means the same thing. Starbucks, HOYTS and Boost Juice give a drink or a snack. Nando's and The Body Shop give a voucher with a set value, and the Nando's one is $15. Grill'd's offer is free chips, but only with a burger, salad or Super Sliders at full price.

"Free" in a headline often hides a condition in the terms, which is why this guide shows the purchase column separately. A reward that needs a purchase in the previous months is still free on the day, but you cannot join the day before and expect it.

Marketing messages and your data

Chatime's terms say you must be registered to receive its marketing to get the birthday tea, and Nando's says members need to stay opted in to communications to reach the perks. Grill'd, by contrast, says reward emails are sent even if you do not subscribe to its marketing. If you would rather not receive promotions, read this part of the terms before you join.

What this guide leaves out

We only list programs that are free to join and whose terms describe a concrete reward. Percentage discounts, paid tiers such as the HOYTS VIP tier, and programs that mention a "birthday treat" without saying what it is are not included. Oporto's Flame Rewards is left out for now because its own pages disagree about the welcome offer and its birthday reward is a discount that depends on your tier.
